Chapter 7
At the next rest stop, Gen climbed out and headed for the Friskin wagon. When she spotted Andrea, she called out to her.
âHello Andrea. Come visit for a minute.â
The green-eyed pampered socialite wore a common traveling dress and her hair looked disheveled. Perhaps sheâd been napping too.
âYouâre Graceâs sister, arenât you?â she asked. Gen was surprised she didnât mention Nickâs name as the reference to her family.
âYes, I am. We were expecting to hear from you, knowing your eighteenth birthday was fast approaching. Time for a new wardrobe.â
Andrea laughed and pointed to her outfit. âAs you can see, clothing is not a high priority out here.â
âWe missed you at Sandy and Jethroâs wedding, but obviously you had other plans.â Gen hugged the woman. âSo glad to have you traveling with us. My husband and I are on our honeymoon.â
âWho goes on a honeymoon with other people?â she asked.
âWe do. Itâs not safe traveling alone. The Indians are worrisome on occasion, and the countless rogues on the trails lie in wait to invade a lonely campsite built for two.â
âI suppose youâre right,â said Andrea.
âBut this is the last place I expected to see you,â said Gen. âFigured you were more the going-abroad type?â
âDonât put all debutants into a neat bundle. For me, life at the estate is like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.â
âIâm sorry to hear that,â said Gen. âIs it true you have a child with you?â
âItâs not mine, if thatâs what youâre thinking. Iâm on my way to meet up with my future husband, the father of the baby.â
âHow wonderful! You have all this time alone to bond with the child before you arrive,â said Gen.
âIt might have been perfect, until I discovered Nicolas was the one hired to accompany me. Of course, Terrance has no idea the man is obsessed with me. Your brother is not easy to shake off.â
âHave you told him that you love another?â
âLove? I donât even know Mr. Laker. But he does promise me everything I need to start fresh where no one knows me.â
âBe careful that youâre not exchanging one prison for another. Men can say just about anything in a letter,â said Gen.
âBut heâs entrusted me with his child. That speaks highly of the man,â Andrea said in his defense.
âWhy was he separated from the baby in the first place?â
âHis wife died in childbirth and at first he grieved and could not face the infant. The infant stayed with his grandparents. But now Terrance wants to start over fresh â with me and his son. I find it endearing.â
Gen gulped down her fears. If her so-called future husband arranged delivery of the child to Denver, why couldnât he have brought it all the way to Colorado Springs? And why on earth would Andrea have to foot the bill for the original transportation on the train, and now hide herself on a wagon train before meeting him? It all sounded rather fishy. And what did Genâs brother, Nick, have to do with it all?
âWould you care to walk a spell?â she asked Andrea.
